Travel agents and tour companies justify this by saying that they will miss out revenue by having a room only occupied by one person, or that the cleaning bill for a room is the same whether it is one or two persons.

Whatever the reasoning, it still is a rip-off!

However, with four million people a year travelling by themselves, without a companion, the market has now changed. Holidays for single travellers are now much more widely available.

There are some great tour companies that organise travel groups for singles and charge no singles supplements.

Definitely, though, a single woman has to be careful when travelling alone. Single travellers are vulnerable to being vicitimized because they often make friends with strangers, and for some reason they act more recklessly than they would at home, even though they are in a strange place.

Don’t let that happen to you.

And if you come from a liberal city or campus town, remember that much of the world – especially outside of the urbanised West – does not have the same free and equal attitudes toward women, particularly if you are alone and “unprotected”. And you cannot rely on the police to protect you in many of these places.

These are unpleasant realities, but ones you should face.

Outside of the West, however, there are some exceptions, with Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and to some extent Malaysia having reputations for being very safe for single women.

Group Size, Budget

If you are going with a singles vacation package, you should also take note of the size of the group you are going with.

On cruises the numbers can be in the hundreds, while for certain resorts, destinations or activity, the vacation can be small and intimate, at as few as 5 or 10 in a group.

Of course your budget is important in your making your decision. New York and Japan are very expensive, while Las Vegas or South-east Asia can be relatively inexpensive.

The choice of vacations for singles offered by today’s travel companies is extremely wide.

Travel as light as possible. The fewer suitcases you have to lug around the better.
If you have to go to the bathroom while on the plane, do not hesitate to ask the air hostesses/hosts to keep an eye on your child(ren). They are usually pleased to do so, and it is part of their job even if they are not!
